What are air bonding and optical bonding? From the structure of the screen, we can divide the screen into 3 parts, from top to bottom are the cover glass(CG), the touch panel(TP), and the LCM. These three parts need to be bonded together, and the bonding method can be divided into two types: air bonding and optical bonding.

Air bonding is also known as double-sided tape bonding, that is, simply use double-sided tape to fix the touch panel and the four sides of the LCM. In this way, there is an air layer between the touch panel and LCM.

The optical bonding is to glue the touch panel(TP) and the LCM together with water glue or optical glue without gaps.

The advantages of the air bonding compared with the air bonding:

*Better display effect. The optical bonding eliminates the air between the touch panel and LCM, which can greatly reduce light reflection and reduce the loss of transmitted light, thereby increasing the brightness and enhancing the display effect of the screen.

*The screen is protected from dust and moisture. The air layer of the air bonding is easily polluted by the dust and water vapor in the environment, which affects the use of the end products. While in the optical bonding method, OCA glue fills the gap, the touch panel and LCM are closely attached, and dust and water vapor have nowhere to enter. Thereby maintaining the cleanliness of the screen.

*Reduce noise interference. The close combination of the touch panel and the LCM can not only improve the strength, but also can effectively reduce the interference caused by noise to the touch signal, and improve the smoothness of the touch operation.

*The optical bonding screen has a thinner body. The touch panel and LCM are bonded with optical glue, which only increases the thickness of 25μm-50μm, which is 0.1mm-0.7mm thinner than the air bonding method.

*Simplify the installation of the display with the end product. The assembly of optical bonding screens with the whole machine can be directly fixed by means of snaps or locking screws, which reduces the assembly problems caused by the fitting deviation, and at the same time, simplifies the assembly process and reduces the assembly cost. What’s more, the frame using optical bonding can be made narrower, which is helpful for narrow frame design.

Disadvantages of full lamination process compared to traditional frame paste process:

*Because of the complex process of full paste, the yield is lower and the cost is higher.

*It is difficult to rework, and the screen needs to be replaced as a whole after damage, and the maintenance and replacement costs are high.
